Vientiane is the capital and the largest city of Laos and is located on the banks of the Mekong, close to the Thai border. The city had a population of 950,000 as of the 2020. Vientiane is noted as the home of the most significant national monuments in Laos.
Although still a small city, the capital attracts many tourists. The city contains many temples and Buddhist monuments. A popular attraction for foreign visitors is Pha That Luang, an important national cultural monument of Laos and one of its best known stupas.
